Privacy Policy

Overview
This Privacy Policy describes how Mode Labs ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares personal information when you visit our website, use the Verdict app, take part in our community, or purchase our products. The Verdict app additionally carries its own app-specific privacy policy at /publisher/privacy. We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your data responsibly.
Information We Collect
Information You Provide
We collect information that you voluntarily provide to us when you:
- Use the Verdict app (account details and mission proof you submit, per the app policy)
- Join the dispatch list (email address, used only for the updates you asked for)
- Purchase Citizenship or physical products (name, shipping address where relevant, and billing information processed by our payment processor; for Citizenship, the public display name you choose for the Founding Register)
- Use the feedback channel (your message, the area and type you select, an optional reply address, and the page and browser you sent it from)
- Contact us for support or feedback
Information We Collect Automatically
When you access or use the Service, we automatically collect certain information, including:
- Usage data (pages visited, features used, actions taken)
- Log data (IP address, browser type, device information, operating system)
- Approximate location based on IP address
- Cookies and similar tracking technologies
- Analytics events (page views, clicks, session duration)
Information from Third Parties
We may receive information from third-party services, including:
- Authentication providers (if you sign in using a third-party service)
- Payment processors (transaction status, but not full payment card details)
Discord Community Data
When the Richard Discord app is installed in a server, we process data made available to the app through Discord in channels where it has permission to operate. This may include Discord user and member identifiers, usernames and display names, server and channel identifiers, member roles and join or role-change events, and message content, attachments, reactions, and related message metadata.
Richard uses member data to register new members, manage access and progression roles, and keep mission and participation records connected to the correct Discord member. It uses message content only for community features that depend on what a member posts, including accepting mission proof, opening access after a member declaration, presenting proof for community review, and producing bounded community-level summaries and themes.
Message content may be processed by automated analysis services to summarize conversation windows and identify aggregate themes. We do not use Discord data to train our own or a third party's general-purpose machine-learning or AI models.
The Threshold & the Public Record
Crossing the threshold on our website writes an entry consisting of a sequential witness designation and a server timestamp, and places a random token in your browser so the site can recognise you when you return. The token is stored hashed on our side and is not linked to a name, email, or account. Your designation may be shown on pages you visit. Clearing the cookie ends the recognition; the numbered entry itself remains as an anonymous row.
The Founding Register is public and permanent: the display name a citizen chooses is published against their founder number, and remains on the register (marked sleeping) if citizenship lapses. Citizens can change their display name by contacting us.
Public acts in our community can be cited on the public record (for example in round reports or Hall entries) by the handle the act was performed under. If you prefer not to be cited by handle, contact us and we will honour the request in future entries and review existing ones.
How We Use Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To provide, maintain, and improve the Service
- To personalize your experience (recognise your standing and show your designation and progress)
- To process and fulfill Citizenship purchases and orders for physical products, including publishing the display name you choose on the public Founding Register
- To communicate with you about your account, orders, and Service updates
- To analyze usage patterns and improve the Service through analytics tools
- To ensure security, prevent fraud, and enforce our Terms of Service
- To operate Discord community onboarding, member access, roles, missions, proof review, progression, moderation, and aggregated community insights
- To send transactional emails and, with your consent, optional product updates (you may opt out at any time)
- To comply with legal obligations and protect our rights
Legal Bases for Processing
We process your personal information based on the following legal grounds:
- Your consent (where you have provided it)
- Performance of a contract (to provide the Service you have requested)
- Our legitimate interests (to improve the Service, ensure security, and communicate with you)
- Compliance with legal obligations
Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to provide the Service, fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, and comply with our legal obligations.
If you request deletion of your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information, except where we are required to retain it for legal, security, or fraud prevention purposes. Some information may persist in backups for a limited period.
For Discord data, the verbatim API payload is retained for up to 30 days. Parsed message fields, member records, mission and progression records, and derived conversation summaries may be retained for longer where needed to operate the community, preserve earned progression, analyze aggregate participation, enforce safety, or comply with legal obligations. Members may request access to or deletion of their stored data using the contact details below. Discord server administrators may also restrict the channels Richard can access or remove the app.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
International Transfers
Your information may be processed and stored in countries other than your own, including where our service providers (such as Firebase and analytics platforms) operate. These countries may have data protection laws that differ from those in your jurisdiction.
We take reasonable steps to ensure that your information is protected in accordance with this Privacy Policy, regardless of where it is processed.
