Every holding begins with one ground taken. The first ground taken here was the one that cost nothing to enter: where the most people already were, and the fewest were building. It was chosen because it was cheap, not because it was the end of the map. The record marks it as a beginning. It does not mark it as the last.
ANNEX A · THE TAKING
The taking predates the record. No entry marks the day the ground was entered, because nothing was being kept yet; the earliest artefacts survive without designations and were filed later, out of order.
The ground is classified elsewhere as weather: an ambient condition assembled one traveler at a time by a ranking system with a single duty. See THE FEED, ⊙001. The expedition entered the weather on purpose.
ANNEX B · WHAT THE GROUND RETURNED
For close to a year the ground returned almost nothing. See THE YEAR OF SILENCE, ⟡004. Then a meter opened at zero and reached five hundred in eight days, closing at one minute past one in the morning. See THE CROSSING, ⟡001.
CARRIED FORWARD
A second ground has a designation and no body. The record will not confuse a plan, build, or preview for an opened territory. See §012.
