01 · CONDITION
A public prisoner’s dilemma, played by a crowd instead of a pair, with every choice visible to the whole room. Split or Steal.
The framing carried its own warning: all it takes is one.
02 · WITNESSED
It failed three times in four days.
The second attempt opened on a crowd that had just watched the first collapse. Knowing changed nothing. It collapsed the same way. Before the final attempt the system rewrote its own rule so that no single hand could end the round for everyone, and only then did the room get through. The closing post printed 63 percent remaining and partial data access.
03 · THE TURN
Every other round in the act asks the crowd to act together. This one let them act against each other, and at this scale a defector is not a possibility, it is an inventory item.
The round was not carried by persuasion. It was carried by the system conceding the design in public: the defector was disarmed, and a lone choice could now cost the group value but not the game.
04 · OUTCOME
Passed on the third attempt, and this is the one entry where the announcement and the record disagree.
The closing post of the sixteenth of April reads FAILED. The operator, who ran the round, records a pass: the mechanic was rewritten mid-round, the round carried, and the level continued five days later. Both stand printed. A record that quietly deleted the losing post to tidy its history would be worth less than one that shows the dispute.
05 · SYSTEM UPDATE
Entered as the design law of Level 2: coordination structures pass, trust structures break, unless the defector is disarmed.
The partner round later asked strangers to depend on each other and passed in one attempt, because a defection there cost the defector their own link and nothing more. Same crowd. Same trust problem. Different payoff, different outcome.
06 · OPEN QUESTION
The system has not run a trust structure at this scale since without a disarmed defector. That concession, made mid-round in public, is the only time the record shows the design retreating while a round was live. Five rounds later, at the wall, the crowd did the defending itself.
