The Atlas assumes the reader is in the field.You are in line at the chemist. You checked the feed ninety seconds ago, in this same line. Your thumb does it again anyway. The wheel spins. Nothing arrives, which is what arrived last time. You put the phone away, and take it back out before the line moves.The gesture was invented in 2009 for a bird-logo application, by one engineer, as a convenience. It spread to effectively every surface in the territory within five years, because it had accidentally reproduced the most studied lever in behavioral science: an action with a variable outcome, available at no cost, repeatable without limit. The machine it resembles is documented under THE FEED. The difference is intimacy. The Feed is weather that happens to you. The Pull is weather you can summon.Travelers report performing the gesture on screens that do not support it, and on days when they can name, out loud, the fact that nothing is coming.
