ATLAS // TERRAIN // ENTRY 07: THE ARCHIVE

Classification: terrain. One per traveler. Access: unrestricted, rarely used, occasionally forced.It is 1am and you are seventy-four weeks deep in your own profile. You did not plan the expedition. Somewhere below the fold is a person using your name, posting with total confidence about a life you barely recall operating, in a voice you would not use now, at a person you no longer speak to. The cringe arrives on schedule. The cringe is the border checkpoint of this terrain, and every traveler pays it.The Archive is the only region where a traveler meets a previous traveler wearing their face. The territory did not build it as a mirror. It accumulated, post by post, because publishing was free and deleting was effortful, and then the platforms discovered the terrain had value and began forcing visits: memories, anniversaries, a photograph from this day six years ago, delivered without warning into an ordinary afternoon. The forced visit is indifferent to what the photograph contains. The person in it may be gone in any of the ways people go.Travelers who mine the Archive on purpose report a consistent finding: the past self is a stranger with your handwriting. The finding is uncomfortable and appears to be developmentally correct, since a self that matched its archive would be a self that had stopped.LAW. The Archive proves the traveler was someone else.
