The number is lower than the last one, and something in your chest is doing arithmetic you did not authorize, and at minute forty you delete the post, not because it was wrong but because it was falling. Nothing was wrong with it. It was simply observed to weigh less than you did yesterday.The Metric is the territory's gravity: a public number attached to every act of expression, pulling everything toward itself. Its behavior follows a law documented long before the territory existed, in economics, under the name Goodhart: when a measure becomes a target, it stops measuring. The count was installed to measure attention. The moment it became visible it became the target, and the territory's expression began reshaping itself to fall well, which is why so much of what travels here has the same aerodynamic shape.The territory's own engineers have acknowledged the force. At least one major platform ran years of experiments hiding the counts from everyone but the author, and shipped the option, and the option exists today, off by default, used by few. The Atlas records the experiment's most honest finding: the force is disliked and chosen, simultaneously, by the same travelers.LAW. In the territory the number is gravity.
